How to make AI safe for democracy?
Description
Join this interactive webinar organised by Make.org and the European Center for Not-For-Profit Law on AI and democracy, where researchers, policymakers, and democracy experts will explore both the risks and opportunities that AI presents for democratic systems and public participation. Drawing on key findings from the Democratic Commons global research programme, speakers will highlight approaches to designing AI tools that are safe for democracy.
The session will explore how democratic principles can be defined and embedded into AI governance and whether the EU’s new, first-of-its-kind legal frameworks on AI are adequate to protect democratic institutions and fundamental rights.
Objectives
- Understand the democratic stakes of AI regulation under the EU AI Act and the Council of Europe Framework Convention;
- Discuss AI risks and opportunities to our democracies, and concrete ways to align AI with democratic values;
- Collect input from participants on the Democratic Commons workplan and conceptual framework;
- Build a collaborative multidisciplinary network focused around building “safe for democracy” open source AI tools.
