The Education for Democracy Foundation was created to support pro-democratic and pro-civic changes in society, first of all in Poland and in the former USSR, especially where there is limited access to education, the labor market and the possibility of co-deciding about one's own fate. It has been operating on the initiative of activists of the Polish democratic opposition and the American Federation of Teachers, who during the transformation period supported Polish educational environments. It strives to ensure that people take responsibility for their social environment and are open to other cultures and societies. The Foundation is currently active in Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Tajikistan, Moldova, Russia, and cooperates with the Polish diaspora in Western Europe and the USA.
