Urban Citizenship: Rights and Practices

Urban Citizenship: Rights and Practices

Description

Seminar by Prof. Marisol García (University of Barcelona), organised by the Arenberg Doctoral School.

Since the mid-1990s, the citizenship debate has taken a strong ‘urban turn’ (Bauböck 2003; Garcia 1996; Faist and Häußermann 1996). Researchers of urban citizenship focus on the cooperation between citizens and non-citizens to overcome legal barriers and to realize their political, civic, or social rights. These studies also consider the tension between national and local regulations concerning citizenship rights and role of municipal governments that have shown to be major institutional actors in providing civic, social, and political inclusion to residents who are not formal citizens.

Instead of seeing citizens as recipients of citizenship rights, should we look at the contribution of citizens who, through their acts have helped to enact citizenship (Isin and Nielsen, 2008)??

The seminar addresses the scope of urban citizenship as a field of social action where civic organizations occupy a central role in the practices of citizenship through direct participation in community and neighbourhood projects (Blokland et al., 2015; García, 2006).
